Abstract
Hrvatski političar Stjepan Radić, poznatiji kao osnivač i kasnije vođa Hrvatske pučke seljačke stranke, već od kraja Prvog svjetskog rata, odnosno nagovještaja o raspadu Austro- Ugarske, intenzivno je bio uključen u krojenje hrvatske budućnosti. Pritom se od samog početka zalagao za što veću autonomiju nje i njenog naroda. Ulaskom Hrvatske u novu državnu zajednicu, njena sudbina predana je u ruke srpskim vlastima, što je bilo protivno njegovoj volji. Iako se odvažio na beskompromisnu borbu za poboljšanje položaja Hrvatske, zbog spletki i manipulacija vladajućeg režima koji je posjedovao neograničenu vlast, to njegovo djelovanje moglo bi se okarakterizirati kao borba s vjetrenjačama. S obzirom na to da je imao podršku velikog dijela naroda te da nije namjeravao odustati od svog cilja, vlasti su se odlučile obračunati s njim. Nakon propalih pokušaja da ga osude i ništa uspješnijih pokušaja da uspostave suradnju s njim, odlučili su ići do samoga kraja kako bi ga definitivno uklonili sa političke scene. Stoga je na njega izvršen atentat u Narodnoj skupštini prilikom kojeg je ranjen, ali je nakon kratkog vremena preminuo od posljedica. Sukladno tome, ostao je zapamćen kao simbol požrtvovnosti i borbe za vlastitu domovinu.
Abstract (english)
Croatian politician Stjepan Radić, better known as the founder and later leader of the Croatian People's Peasant Party has been intensively involved in shaping Croatia's future since the end of the First World War, an ie hint of Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegration. From the very beginning, he advocated for greater autonomy for Croatia and its people. Having Croatia enter a new state union, its fate was handed over to the Serbian authorities against Stjepan’s will. Although he dared to fight uncompromisingly to improve Croatia's position his actions could be described as fighting with windmills due to the intrigues and manipulations of the ruling regime which had unlimited power. Given that he had the support of a large part of the people, and that he did not intend to give up his goal, the authorities decided to deal with him. After failed attempts to condemn him and equally unsuccessful attempts to establish cooperation with him, they decided to go to the very end to remove him from the political scene. Therefore, he was wounded in an assassination at the National Assembly, but after a short time, he died as a result. Accordingly, he remained remembered as a symbol of sacrifice and the fight for his homeland.
