The main objective of this diploma thesis is to analyze and explain the use of modal expressions and buzzwords in Croatian political speech. This thesis introduces the reader to the terms of rhetoric, public political discourse, prepared and spontaneous speech, and with the concepts of modal expressions and buzzwords that are part of every speech. The analysis of modal phrases and buzzwords has been carried out at several levels so as to better understand political utterances. The final result of each of the analyses is shown, not only qualitatively, but also quantitatively (graphical representation). The results have shown that the frequency of the use of modal phrases and buzzwords is equal for all speakers, but their utterance is not saturated with them. Furthermore, the classification of modal phrases of Ivo Škarić proved to be very useful because modal phrases of all speakers could be classified in some of them. Also, speakers use modal phrases and buzzwords at inappropriate locations in spontaneous speeches, while in prepared speech there are almost no errors. It can be concluded that all speakers are good public speakers whose speech is, to a greater or lesser extent, complemented by modal phrases and buzzwords.
