Abstract
This thesis deals with the translation of extra-linguistic cultural references in literary texts. The first part includes theoretical review of the relationship between translation studies and culture, as well as an overview of different translation strategies and procedures for translating implicit elements of culture. The second part presents an analysis of the examples from the corpus, i.e. the translation of culture-bound elements in Dan Brown’s novels ''The Da Vinci Code'' and ''Angels and Demons''. The procedures used for the analysis are: through-translation, literal translation, transcription, naturalization, descriptive equivalent, deletion, translation label, translation couplet, cultural equivalent, recognized translation, acronyms and notes. It can be concluded that cultural elements are heavily present in literary works, and that translators need to be careful when rendering them into the target text, always keeping in mind the impact the translation will have on the target audience.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj se rad bavi prevođenjem implicitnih elemenata kulture u književnim djelima. Prvi dio sadrži teorijski pregled odnosa između prevođenja i kulture, kao i pogled na različite strategije i postupke za prevođenje implicitnih elemenata kulture. Drugi dio rada predstavlja analizu primjera iz korpusa, tj. praktično proučavanje prijevoda kulturoloških elemenata s engleskog na hrvatski jezik u djelima ''Da Vincijev kod'' i ''Anđeli i demoni'' Dana Browna. U analizi su korištene sljedeće procedure: izravno prevođenje, doslovno prevođenje, transkripcija, naturalizacija, opisni ekvivalent, izostavljanje, prijevodna oznaka, prijevodni par, kulturološki ekvivalent, akronimi i napomene. Možemo zaključiti da su kulturološki elementi iznimno prisutni u književnim djelima te da prevoditelji moraju biti oprezni pri njihovom prevođenju u tekst jezika cilja, imajući uvijek na umu utjecaj koji će prijevod imati na ciljanu publiku.
