This thesis deals with Tactical media and their related practices. It is based on a research of alternative and activist new media practices and their influence on the change in cultural and social paradigm of the 20th and the 21st century. The starting point of the research is the development of the digital age and the notions related to it based on the theories by Marshall McLuhan and Manuel Castells. Furthermore, the term new media and the development of net.art and hactivism are explained. The origin of tactical media can be found in the actions of the Situationist International, a movement based by Guy Debord and others, and their modus operandi, whose examples are featured in the thesis. The theoretical frame is based with the help of the concepts by the key thinkers of social reality of that age – Michel De Certeau, Jean Baudrillard, Hakim Bey and the aforementioned Guy Debord. The Manifest ABC of Tactical Media which was written by their pioneers David garcia and Geert Lovink, provided the framework and usage for tactical media, is also featured, as well as the main examples of tactical media. With an overview of the legacy of tactical media, an introduction of their activities has been given for the Croatian context. A development of independent culture, which is responsible for the examples of tactical media use, is also described, as well as related practices of alternative and activist nature.
