Abstract
The main goal of this final paper was to demonstrate how common and widespread the phenomenon of semantic change is, and how it affects even the most basic words in our everyday usage, without us being aware of it. The goal was to be reached through an analysis of various etymological dictionaries that were searched in order to find examples of semantic change in English nouns denoting humans and animals. The notion of semantic change was also examined thoroughly from a theoretical point of view through an extensive research of linguistic literature.
Abstract (croatian)
Glavni cilj ovog završnog rada je pokazati kako je semantička promjena zapravo jedna uobičajena i česta pojava, te kako se zbiva i u najjednostavnijim riječima koje su dio naše svakodnevne uporabe, bez da smo toga i svjesni. Cilj se pokušao postići analizom različitih etimoloških rječnika koji su pretraženi da bi se došlo do primjera semantičke promjene u engleskim imenicama koje označavaju ljude i životinje. Koncept semantičke promjene je također sagledan s teorijskog aspekta kroz iscrpno pretraživanje stručne literature.
