Abstract
Nowadays, people mostly communicate through social media. They use it to connect with different people, engage in online discourse and to spread information. The language they use is very informal and has its own characteristics. Networking sites brought to some innovations such as new words, new meanings of the already known ones and similar features which main purpose is to simplify communication. These features also provide the transmission of a message in 140 characters Twitter allows. This final paper discusses the language of social media with its characteristics. The most common features of language on Twitter are slang, new words, abbreviations, emoticons and hashtags. They are explained and exemplified by the Twitter posts. The study also includes the literature that deals with similar topics.
Abstract (croatian)
Ljudi danas najaviše komuniciranju putem društvenih mreţa. Koriste ih da bi se povezali s drugim ljudima, stupili u online razgovor i širili informacije. Jezik koji koriste je jako neformalan i ima vlastite karakteristike. Društvene mreže su dovele do nekih inovacija kao što su nove riječi, nova značenja već poznatih riječi i slične značajke čiji glavni cilj je pojednostaviti komunikaciju. Ove značajke omogućuju i prijenos poruka u 140 znakova koje Twitter dopušta. Ovaj završni rad raspravlja o jeziku društvenih mrežna i njegovim karakteristikama. Najčešće značajke jezika na Twitteru su sleng, nove riječi, skraćenice, emotikoni i hashtagovi. Ove značajke su objašnjene i potkrijepljene primjerima objava sa Twittera. Istraživanje također uključuje literaturu koja se bavi sličnim temama.
