Parenting is one of the most important and challenging roles in an individual's life. In contemporary enviroment, parenting becomes increasingly challenging so is the interest and the need to apply this relative new concept of mindfulness to the parent-child relationship. This paper presents the concept of mindful parenting in which parents deliberately exercise awareness of the here-and-now in the parent-child relationship. This is done by developing the qualities of listening with full attention, self-regulation and emotional awareness, and by bringing compassion and nonjudgmental acceptance to their parenting interactions. First, the concept of parenting was defined, as well as the parental experience itself and the characteristics of competent parents. Next, the concept of mindfulness was further defined, which refers to intentionally paying attention to one's own experiences or to the environment at the present moment without judgment. Furthermore, the key part of this paper which is mindful parenting is defined. Particular emphasis is placed on defining this new concept of mindful parenting as well as on the characteristics of such parents. In conclusion, this paper presents a new concept of mindful parenting, as well as benefits and need for increasing use of that concept in today's society.
