Structure of Scientific Revolutions is a work by Thomas Kuhn in which the concept of scientific revolutions is layed out. Scientific revolutions are the changes in paradigm. Paradigm is a collection of various features, rule-like statements, methodologies, terminologies and laws that are tied to the tradition of scientific research in one field of study. Thomas Kuhn claimed that changes between paradigms are preceeded and succedeed by science which he calls „normal“ science. The kind of science which is devoted to following the paradigm, articulating , expanding and deepening it within it's confines. But over a certain period of time a number of inconsistencies are accumulated. Said inconsistencies pose difficulty for normal science because over certain period of time they prove the inadequacy of the dominant paradigm. Once the inadequacy is proven scientists turn to the the new paradigm. A paradigm that is very different in it's basic concepts to the one that came before it. It is incommensurable. That means that science is not cumulative. It doesn't build upon one another. It arises from the inconsistencies at some time in scientific research and dicourse. A paradigm shift exists so that scientists can more easily find a solutions to a certain scientific problems. Kuhn conceptualises a science as a puzzle-solving activity. It produces a change that is very pragmatic in it's nature. It takes a while for a theory to become paradigmatic and it is achieved trough a certain amount of time and it bring drastic change to the discipline. After that time the change in paradigm is often worldview shattering for the members of scientific communities. This essay is devoted not only to uncovering progression of scientific paradigms, the differences between them and consequentially what does a change in a worldview mean for a scientific community.
