Abstract
Split je tijekom srednjovjekovlja doživio značajne promjene u prostornoj organizaciji te je postao pravi srednjovjekovni grad priključenjem najstarijeg predgrađa jezgri. Do toga je došlo gradnjom bedema oko novog predgrađa krajem 13. i početkom 14. st. te formiranjem prvih gradskih četvrti u starom i novom dijelu grada. Tim proširenjem Split je udvostručio svoju površinu te s vremenom postaje grad s dva centra. Iako su podignuti novi bedemi, ipak je dio naselja ostao izvan njihova opsega pa su tako nastala najstarija pučka predgrađa na predjelima Veli Varoš i Lučac. Uza sve to, za grad je važan i početak gradnje zvonika katedrale koji predstavlja jedan od simbola grada, a njegova gradnja završena je vjerojatno do 16. st. Što se tiče prostornog razvitka tijekom ranog novog vijeka, grad je doživio velike prostorne promjene koje su bile uvjetovane turskom opasnošću i trgovinom. U zapadnom dijelu gradske luke podignut je mletački kaštel već u 15. st., u njenom istočnom dijelu sagrađen je lazaret krajem 16. st., a polovicom 17. st. izgrađen je novi fortifikacijski sustav koji se sastojao od bedema s bastionima oko grada i dviju odvojenih utvrda na lokacijama Gripe i Bačvice.
Abstract (english)
During the Middle Ages Split experienced some significant changes in its spatial organization and it became a real medieval city by incorporating the oldest suburb into the town’s core. That happened with the building of the new city walls at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th c. and with the formation of the first districts in both old and new parts of the town. With this change Split doubled its area and eventually became a city with two centers. Even though the new city walls were built, some settlements were still outside their perimeter so that is how the oldest folk suburbs of Veli Varoš and Lučac have developed. Besides all of that, the beginning of the construction of cathedral’s belfry, one of Split’s symbols, was also important for the town and its construction ended during the Early Modern Period in the first half of the 16th c. As for the spatial development during the Early Modern Period, the town experienced some big changes which were conditioned by the Turkish danger and the trade. Venetian fortress was built already in the 15th c. in the western area of the city port, lazaretto was built at the end of the 16th c. in its eastern area and at the half of the 17th c. new fortification system was built. It consisted of the walls with bastions around the town and the two separate fortresses on locations Gripe and Bačvice.
