Tradition od stonemasonry on the eastern adriatic coast, dates back as far as first modern human communities. For thousands of years commoners had develop buliding methods using the most accessible natural materials, in this case natural stone, with each generation consciously passing and enhancing previously acquired knowledge. At the beginning of the 20th century tradition is threatend by introduction of new, modern technologies, and with a strong industrialisation and modernisation at the mid-twentieth century. Vernacular architecture is to be considered regressive and outdated. As we enter the 21st century, we become aware of dalmatian vernacular stone arhitecture being introduced to it's own renaissance, partially because of tourism policy measures and the potential of extra income, and partially because of raising awareness of this building techniques being indigenous, original, aesthetic, ecological, sustainable and much more. Awakening is not always accopmanied by great resaults, as there are many examples of unprofessional heritige menagement or imitating that has nothing to do with the tradition. Same can be sad for largest and most preserved historic suburb of Split- the Veli Varoš neighborhood. This theses includes process of settlement formation and the specificties of it's architectural heritage, vernacular architecture in the first place, and the evaluation of political, economical, social and cultural environment on the house-building and urban planning. The covered period is between the first permeanent settlement and the beginning of the 19th century, when the social, cultural and other factors progressively change the type of settlement and it's construction methods.
