The immigration is one of the on-going processes in the world. It happens in smaller and bigger waves or individually, and it has an impact on the immigrants as well as on the country that accepts them. The United States of America is a country that is determined by its multi-cultural society and it is a destination country for many people in search of better life opportunities. For a long time, the United States has been home to many Chinese immigrants. Their arrival has enriched America with different culture and new traditions. However, creating a life on a new continent has an effect on immigrants and their identities. Very often, they have to adjust to new circumstances and accept new customs. The combination of two different cultures can be hard to maintain, especially when those values have to be transmitted to the American-born children. This thesis explores life circumstances and troubles of Chinese immigrants to America from their initial arrivals. It deals with the immigrants‘ attempts to keep their traditions and to pass them on to their children. Many of the problems they encounter are presented in novels by Amy Tan, a Chinese-American writer who tries to bring closer to her readers the experiences of the first and second generation of the Chinese immigrants. This thesis presents the issue of immigrant‘s identity based on Amy Tan‘s novels The Joy Luck Club, The Kitchen God‟s Wife and The Bonesetter‟s Daughter.
