The topic of this thesis is audiovisual translation with different types explained and the emphasis on dubbing. Different definitions of audiovisual translation are indicated at the beginning and it is explained how practicing this type of translation has many benefits for learning a foreign language in class. The thesis offers the story of the evolution of audiovisual translation throughout history and a comparison between its two most important types: dubbing and subtitling. One part of the thesis is dedicated to describing culture specific elements that are the center of the contrastive analysis including idioms, songs and the usage of a third language. The first part of the thesis also includes a description of the translation strategies offered by Jorge Diaz Cintas & Aline Remael (2007) according to which the analysis of the examples was made. The second part of the thesis includes the contrastive analysis of the corpus, that is the confrontation between culture specific elements in the source text and their translations in Italian. The examples are taken from three movies, one of which is animated, and one TV series. These are sorted according to ten categories of culture specific elements by Rachele Antonini e Delia Chiaro (2005) and presented in a form of table, with original terms on the left and the translated versions on the right. At the end, the thesis offers a statistical representation of translation strategies used in the corpus.
