Anxiety is a condition characterized by feelings of fear, uneasiness and discomfort and it occurs as a normal reaction of organism to danger or a threatening situation. When developmentally appropriate, normal anxiety, begins to significantly interfere with a person’s functioning, it is a matter of pathological anxiety (anxiety disorders). Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders in childhood. In this paper, the most attention is paid to: separation anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and selective mutism. Separation anxiety disorder is manifested by excessive, developmentally inappropriate anxiety associated with separation from home or the person to whom the child is attached. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by the appearance of obsessions, repetitive imposed thoughts and compulsions, repetitive actions that the child can not resist, and most often their goal is to respond to obsessions or rigid compliance with the rules. Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder that manifests itself in the absence of children's speech in specific situations or with specific people, with a retained ability to speak in situations in which child feels safe and comfortable. Anxiety disorders in children are most often treated with psychotherapeutic techniques, mainly: cognitive-behavioral therapy, play therapy and family psychotherapy. In addition to psychotherapists and the family, the role of preschool teachers in recognizing the signs of anxiety and choosing work strategies applied to the child and his needs, interests and abilities is indispensable. The goal is for the child to develop anxiety coping strategies as effectively as possible, reduce the accompanying symptoms and thus work on the general improvement of the quality of life.
