Abstract
Značajna pojava u filozofiji i umjetnosti Europe kroz posljednjih nekoliko stoljeća, orijentalizam se pojavljuje kao aspekt romantizma koji se razvija u standardni predložak za radove europskih umjetnika. Dok Europa otkriva zaboravljene, udaljene zemlje i primitivne narode, na samim granicama Europe se Osmansko carstvo pokazuje kao nositelj istočnjačkih utjecaja na europsku kulturu. Europski slikari orijentalizma biraju motive koji im odgovaraju estetski ili simbolički, pa prema tome razvijaju i jednu specifičnu formu u umjetnosti, onu koja je uključivala scene iz harema i s tržnica robova. Dok su Francuzi u slikarstvu isticali egzotičnost i senzualnost Istoka, britanska orijentalistička tradicija u slikarstvu bila je daleko manje nabijena seksualnošću. Erotička idealizacija Orijenta je težnja orijentalista koja do danas oblikuje europsko stajalište o Istoku, ali i Islamu. Ova dva koncepta su Europljanima i u suvremeno doba teško shvatljivi, a sami orijentalizam i doživljaji ženine uloge u orijentalizmu predmet su žustrih feminističkih rasprava. Kako se pristup ženskome tijelu u umjetnosti mijenjao kroz stoljeća uvelike će utjecati na feminističke stavove, i obratno.
Abstract (english)
An important occurrence in the past centuries' philosophy and art, orientalism, rises as an aspect of romanticism. Orientalism developed into a standard layout for making art pieces. While Europe was on its way to discover faraway and forgotten lands, the Ottoman empire brought strong eastern impacts in culture at the very borders of Europe. European orientalist painters chose motifs which appealed to them either aesthetically or symbolically, and that simple act gave life to a new genre in painting, involving scenes from harems or slave markets. The French liked to accentuate the sensual exoticism of the Orient in their painting, but the British orientalist painting tradition bore far less sexuality. The orientalist urge to represent the East as an erotic idealization (instead of a sociological fact) moulded the European thought on the Orient as well as Islam up to this day. Both the Orient and Islam have been enigmatic to Europeans for centuries, and today many studies and debates deal with orientalism, as well as the role of females in the eastern societies. Of course, the ever-changing approach to the female body affects the feminist discourse, and vice versa.
