In mid 3rd century began a more organized ecclesiastical activity, in the capital of the province where the Christian community was the most numerous. The construction of early Christian churches also revealed the need for church furniture, so there are numerous stone furniture which inlude altar rail as an important element that during the liturgy divided the altar space from the space for the believers. The remains of churches in Dalmatia from the period of early Christianity are witnessing the blossoming of Christian art and the rich decoration of ecclesiastical plastics, which had great influence on pre-Romanesque art. Throughout Dalmatia, there are many fragments of church furniture, more precisely the altar rails. Early medieval sites were often built on the foundations of older, early Christian churches. Original rails were often replaced with new ones. The development of altar rails in pre-Romanesque period is indeed a broad term; as in Dalmatia there is a large number of preserved fragments of parts of altar rails, and most of them that are available for reconstruction usually come from the last use phase in our churches. Numerous fragments of liturgical installations have been found in many early medieval structures, including those from the antique and early Christian period, which deeply influenced the new period. Renovations of earlier buildings are particularly significant for the early Middle Ages. In the early Middle Ages there were numerous stone workshops with large influence. For the early Christian, but also the pre-Romanesque decorations of the altar rail, the most commonly used motif was the cross; with various geometric and herbal motifs. In the early Middle Ages there is a new, characteristic braid motif; unavoidable on many fragments from that period, both on the edges and on the other parts within the rail.
