The diploma thesis presents altar paintings of the 17th and 18th century in churches in Korčula Town. The starting point of this work was to examine the religious paintings in Korčula of the baroque period as unavoidable segment of Dalmatian artistic heritage, with the goal of its interpretations and evaluations in the context of post-tridentine iconography and new representation of religious concepts of visual art. The paintings that were included and discussed in this paper are preserved in: Parish Church of St Mark, Church of All Saints (Svi Sveti) which belongs to the Fraternity of All Saints, Church of St Michael, that is under the patronage of the Fraternity of the Virgin of Consolation, and Dominican church of St. Nicholas. Venice is in the possesion of the Korčula Island from the 1420. untill 1797. and the influence of its culture and sacral heritage had to be strongly present on the island. During the 17th and 18th centuries in Korčula the paintings are mostly ordered from Venetian artist whose work is inspired on sixteenth-century painting in Venice and the Veneto and its great masters. Altar paintings ordered by local bishops, noble families and fraternities are painted by artists who often produced a repetitive series of religious pictures with conventional painting models that correspond with conservative taste of Korčula´s society. In Korčula there are the artpieces made by Leandro Bassano, Carlo Ridolfi, Baldassare D´Anna, Matteo Ponzone, Giovanni Carboncino and Francecso Maggiotto. This work has no intentios to be retrospective of entair body of baroque religious paintings in Korčula so it is possible to observe it as an introduction to the study that will hopefully lead to a possible future research.
