In between the two World Wars, the city of Split has developed into an urban center, while still mantaining many features of its past periods. It is a city where modern and traditional values are interwined, that are in many ways contradictory, but still specific to its understanding. This thesis follows the historic path of the Bellevue coffeehouse, one of the first opened coffeehouses in Split, that exists and works for more than a hundred years. What sort d of ideas were exchanged at the Bellevue coffeehouse, which famous names could be seen there, what was the relationship between guests and employees like, are only some of the information we have managed to gather. We also questioned the impact of the coffeehouse on the city of Split, as well as what period is considered to be the culmination of its popularity. All gained data will, hopefully, inspire some future researches of coffeehouses, as well as show how much coffee and coffeehouse are really important to the everyday life of Croatian people. We hope that our research will help all those who firstly wish to find out more about the social life of the Bellevue coffeehouse, and to those who recognize the historical and cultural significance that all major city coffeehouses have, for their cities and entire countries
