This thesis explains the influence of the Dominican Order on the educational system in the Middle Ages, with emphasis on Dominican influence on Croatian territories. The second chapter provides information about the founder of the Dominican Order Dominic de Guzmán. Further more, it explains the history of the establishment of the Dominicans, their role and activities in Europe, as well as on Croatian territories. The third chapter brings an overview of the development of Western European educational system in the Middle Ages, the development of schools within the monasteries and Church centers and also points out the rulers and popes who encouraged the development of schools and science. The last part of the chapter explains the educational system in Dalmatian cities before the arrival of the Dominican Order. The next chapter describes in detail the school system of the Dominican Order and the development of their universities in Europe. The General House of Studies in Prague is presented as a true example of Dominican general educational institutions. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the development of high education on Croatian teritorries with emphasis on the school of Augustin Kažotić in Zagreb, and the General House of Studies in Zadar. The General House of Studies in Zadar is a great example of Dominican General Houses of Studies. Its worth, not only for Zadar and the Dalmatian Province, but for the future of education, is priceless. Therefore, its functions and organization are depicted in detail. This paper is concluded with the sixth and final chapter, which offers a review of the most prominent and most creditable members of the Dominican Order from Croatian teritories during the Middle Ages. The impact that the Dominican Order had on the development of high education in Europe, as well as in Croatia, is indisputable.
