Abstract
In this thesis, J. G. Ballard’s science fiction novels The Wind from Nowhere (1961), The Drowned World (1962) and The Drought (1965) will be explored as guidelines for survival in the age of ecological collapse. Extreme metaphor, a distinct type of metaphor which will be analysed in these novels, will be suggested as a legitimate contribution to the existing theory of metaphor. Other types of metaphor will be analysed to show the connection between the worlds presented in the novels and the world we currently live in. It will be argued that the notion of vacuum as an extreme metaphor offers a literary solution for survival in the new geological era, the Anthropocene.
Abstract (croatian)
U ovom će se radu znanstveno-fantastični romani J. G. Ballarda The Wind from Nowhere (1961), The Drowned World (1962) and The Drought (1965) analizirati kao smjernice za preživljavanje u vremenu ekološke propasti. Ekstremna metafora, zasebna vrsta metafore koja će se analizirati u ovim romanima, bit će predložena kao legitiman doprinos postojećoj teoriji metafore. Druge vrste metafore analizirat će se u svrhu ukazivanja na povezanost svjetova prikazanih u ovim romanima i svijeta u kojem danas živimo. Argumentirat će se da ideja vakuma kao ekstremne metafore nudi književno rješenje za preživljavanje u novom geološkom razdoblju, Antropocenu.
