Abstract
The aim of this thesis was to explore different strategies for idiom translation and how they are used in subtitling. Idioms are defined as strings of words with figurative meaning, specific to a certain culture that often present a challenge for translators. Subtitling, a particular type of audio-visual translation is also defined in the theoretical part, alongside its many constraints. The research done in the practical part contains examples of English idioms and their translations in Croatian, taken from the television series “Friends” that were used to examine for which idiom translation strategy the translators mostly opt for. The research showed that paraphrase is the most frequently used idiom translation strategy in subtitling.
Abstract (english)
Cilj ovog rada bio je istražiti različite strategije prevođenja idioma i kako se iste koriste u podslovljavanju. Idiomi su definirani kao nizovi riječi s figurativnim značenjem koji su specifični za pojedinu kulturu i često predstavljaju izazov za prevoditelje. Podslovljavanje, jedan od oblika audio vizualnog prevođenja, također je definirano u teoretskom dijelu, zajedno sa svojim ograničenjima. Istraživanje provedeno u praktičnom dijelu sadrži primjere engleskih idioma i njihove prijevode na hrvatski jezik koji su preuzeti iz televizijske serije „Prijatelji“, a koji su iskorišteni kako bi se ustanovilo koju od strategija za prevođenje idioma prevoditelji preferiraju. Istraživanje je pokazalo da je parafraziranje strategija koja se najčešće koristi prilikom prevođenja idioma u podslovljavanju.
