Abstract (english) | The aim of this research was to investigate parents’ attitudes towards media, with a special emphasis on animated movies, and to examine parental behaviors that may contribute to their children's media literacy. 401 parents participated in the research, which was conducted during the pedagogical year 2019/2020 in the city of Split area. The data were collected using an online survey that included both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The obtained results showed that parents highly value their own knowledge when it comes to the use of media, as well as a high level of control over media content, but children still spend a lot of time in front of different types of screens. Television is, as many other research studies have shown, the most used medium. Most parents feel that the new animated films versus the old ones are full of violence and negative impacts on children. Parents think that violence is the biggest problem in new animated films, but they also think that there was violence in old animated films as well; however, due to a different and more entertaining portrayal, they did not find it terrible. According to parents, today's animated films are noisy, have fast-paced plots, have a lot of effects, characters have annoying high-pitched voices, there is no warmth, there is a lack of dialogue, they contain ugly words and speech and differ from old animated films by type of animation (2D, 3D), quality, commercialization, recording methods, sound, music, themes. However, a very small number of parents believe that new animated movies are better because of the better image quality, better production and greater selection. Parents are sentimentally attached to animated films of their childhood and have fond memories of them, although this dominance of pleasant emotions may occur due to the very connection with childhood and childish carelessness and not because of the quality of the animated content being watched. |
