This master thesis is dedicated to Jerolim Miše, a Croatian artist, art critic and writer. Born in Split, through a really long period of artistic creation that lasted between 1911 and 1970, he created an extensive oeuvre consisting of hundreds of paintings, drawings and watercolours. The chapters of this thesis will stylistically follow the numerous tendencies that the artist adhered to, starting with the secessionist expressionism, then Cezanne's expressionism, followed by periods of magical realism, colorism and intimism all the way to social realism, and lastly ending with a personal version of pointilist post-impressionism. In the first decades of his work, Miše's oeuvre followed contemporary European artistic tendencies. However, since the 1930s, he lost pace with the current artistic tendencies in Europe and stylistically went back to the past with styles that have long since disappeared. At first exhibiting independently at the Spring Salons, then working with the Group of Independent Artists, and finally becoming the member of the Group of Three alongside Ljubo Babić and Vladimir Becić, Jerolim Miše is referred to as an active participant in the creation of the foundations of twentieth-century Croatian art and some of his more notable works have been recognized as anthological. Thematically unconditionally connected to reality, with his anthropocentric and figurative oeuvre, Jerolim Miše successfully combined European and Croatian, continental and Mediterranean styles, continuously being aware of contemporary and current artistic aspirations which he so often fiercely criticized.
