Abstract
Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se upotrebom jezičnih tabua vezanih uz seksualnost među studentskom populacijom. Točnije, s razlikama u percepciji i korištenju riječi vezanih uz seksualnost u njihovom materinjem jeziku (L1) u odnosu na njihov drugi jezik, engleski (L2). Teorijski dio nudi pregled tabu jezika općenito, od kratkog uvida u njegovo podrijetlo, do tema koje se u današnjem društvu smatraju tabuima, uključujući razgovore vezane uz seks. Također se bavi rezultatima prethodno provedenih istraživanja na temu upotrebe tabu jezika među ljudima u svom materinjem i drugom jeziku, pružajući informacije o učestalosti upotrebe tabu riječi kao i emocionalnoj snazi koju te riječi imaju za njih na materinjem jeziku u odnosu na engleski. U empirijskom dijelu rada prikazani su rezultati istraživanja provedenog među hrvatskim studentima Sveučilišta u Splitu i talijanskim studentima Sveučilišta u Salernu (Universitá degli studi di Salerno). Bavi se njihovom percepcijom i upotrebom riječi koje pripadaju govoru o seksu, odnosno mogućim razlikama koje se javljaju u njihovom materinjem jeziku u odnosu na njihov drugi jezik, engleski. Istraživanje je provedeno u obliku anonimne ankete. Rezultati su pokazali da se tabu jezik vezan uz seksualnost kod studenata češće koristi materinjem jeziku nego u engleskom, kako u usmenoj tako i u pisanoj komunikaciji. Međutim, studenti su riječi i fraze vezane uz seksualnost doživljavali kao uvredljivije u materinjem u usporedbi sa svojim drugim jezikom.
Abstract (english)
This thesis deals with students' use of sex-related taboo language. More precisely, with the differences in perception and use of sex-related words in their native language (L1) versus their second language, English (L2). The theoretical part offers an overview of taboo language in general, from a short glimpse into its origin to the topics considered taboo in today’s society, including sex-related talk. It also addresses the results of previously conducted research on the subject of people's use of taboo language in their native language as well as their second language, providing information on the frequency of use of taboo words as well as the emotional force those words carry for them in their native language versus English. The empirical part of the thesis provides the results of research conducted among Croatian students from the University of Split and Italian students from the University of Salerno (Universitá degli studi di Salerno). It deals with their perception and use of words belonging to sex-related talk, that is, with possible differences occurring in their native language as opposed to their second language, English. The research was carried out in the form of an anonymous survey. Results showed that sex-related taboo language is used more in students’ L1 than in their L2, both in oral and written communication. However, students perceived sex-related words and phrases as more offensive in L1 compared to L2.
