Abstract
Adolescencija je prijelazno razdoblje između djetinjstva i odrasle dobi (Encyclopedia Britannica; prema Kuzman, 2009). Adolescencija se često povezuje s pojmom mentalnog zdravlja, zbog toga što je navedeno razdoblje popraćeno nestabilnim emocionalnim stanjima. Kao važan dio svakodnevnog funkcioniranja i zdravlja općenito, mentalno zdravlje u današnjem svijetu postaje sve poznatija i važnija tema rasprave. S obzirom na to da se velik dio mentalnih poteškoća ispoljava na teže primjetan način, u dosta situacija ono može proći neopaženo, a uz to, i zanemareno. Stoga je važno educirati se o mentalnom zdravlju adolescenata i ostalih društvenih skupina te time prevenirati razvijanje ozbiljnijih teškoća, što u konačnici može dovesti do razvoja kvalitetnijeg temelja za buduće generacije. Uz navedene pojmove, u ovom se radu govorilo o emocionalnim kompetencijama, koje označavaju načine pomoću kojih se pojedinci suočavaju s interpersonalnim i intrapersonalnim emocijama (Petrides i Furnham, 2003; prema Brasseur i sur., 2013) te naučene sposobnosti koje su utemeljene na emocionalnoj inteligenciji (Goleman, 1998). Budući da emocionalne kompetencije uključuju sposobnosti kao što je mogućnost izražavanja emocija, samokontrola, empatija i druge sposobnosti, one su pozitivno povezane s održavanjem mentalnog zdravlja. U ovom će se radu približiti važnost mentalnog zdravlja i emocionalnih kompetencija kod adolescenata, ali i objasniti njihova međusobna povezanost.
Abstract (english)
Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood (Encyclopedia Britannica; as cited in Kuzman, 2009). Adolescence is often associated with the concept of mental health, due to the fact that this period is accompanied by unstable emotional states. As an important part of daily functioning and health in general, mental health is becoming an increasingly recognized and important topic of discussion in today's world. Given that a large part of mental difficulties manifests itself in a less noticeable way, in many situations it can go unnoticed and neglected. Therefore, it is important to educate oneself about the mental health of adolescents and other social groups and thereby prevent the development of more serious difficulties, which can ultimately lead to the development of a better foundation for future generations. In addition to the mentioned terms, this paper adresses emotional competences, which denote the ways in which individuals deal with interpersonal and intrapersonal emotions (Petrides and Furnham, 2003; as cited in Brasseur et al., 2013) and learned abilities that are based on emotional intelligence (Goleman, 1998). Since emotional competencies include abilities such as expressing emotions, self-control, empathy, and other abilities, they are positively associated with maintaining mental health. This paper aims to explore the importance of mental health and emotional competence in adolescents and explain their interconnection.
