Paper presents Ancient Chinese puzzle better known as Tangram. Although there are a number of (math) puzzle, interest in using the tangram puzzle is growing every day around the world, a study of available literature opens up additional possibilities for its application. Tangram puzzle is described by different aspects. An overview of a brief historical origin of the puzzle, its name and the impact of the spread of the puzzle from East to West is also presented. Furthermore, the detailed geometric characteristics of certain parts of tangram puzzles (tans) and some basic characteristics of characters composed of all its parts (tangram figures) are described. One of the characteristics of the Tangram characters is design of the tangram figure. Research conducted on students FFST and KTFST shows importance of the design of the tangram figure. Resoults indicate that the perception of a character depends on personal experiance well as their own preferences. As a special subset of tangram figures stand out convex figures. Furthermore, it is shown how particular skills can be developed using the tangram activity, which is supported by the results of some educational research. Since systematic approach is not developed this work can serve as a (theoretical) basis for further research on the application of tangram puzzle in learning mathematics.
