The main aim of this paper was to describe the construction of modern fortifications throughout Venetian Dalmatia during the 17th and 18th century, while also describing the political and military events that have shaped their creation. After a detailed analysis of these undertakings, a short summary will be made of the most important facts. Clashing of Venetian and Ottoman political and military interests over the eastern Adriatic coast. The developement of modern artillery and firearms alongside the evolution of modern fortification is changing the face of war itself, while these global super powers struggle for control over a region that holds great importance and potential for both sides. Venice, in their fear of a superior military opponent, undertakes immense fortification effort throughout the communes under their control, most prominently Zadar, Šibenik and Split. The Venetians try to maintain a defensive and peaceful stance towards their enemy. As the 17th century passes, the war turns to the favour of Venice, as they gain most of the Dalmatian hinterland and parts of Herzegovina, at which point they focus their fortification focus towards the newly aquired forts of Klis, Knin, Sinj and others. The success in the Dalmatian theatre is mirrored by failures in the Greek theatre of war. These fortification works were designed and overseen by a corps of Venetian engineers, funded by the state and among the best of their time. Although among the best of the period, most of these fortifications will not take part in clashes of the same intensity as those of the centuries past, and their cost will, as well as decline of trade and long periods of war, cripple the Venetian economy, which will never again reach the heights of 15th century.
