Combination of qualitative and quantitative methodology is used here to study the community of stand-up comedians called „Splicka scena” and the audience, mainly habitants of Split and surrounding area. Stand-up comedy is relatively new and unfamiliar cultural form of amusement in Split, formed and led by six comedians who create and present their own jokes through comedy shows so they could encourage visitors to participate in comic view of the society. Divided into different roles, each member of the comic collective participates in organization and promotion of their events. In order to take a closer approach and get deeper insight in what comedians actually do, two ethnographical methods were applied while researching performances from 2018 to 2020 (participant observation and semi-structured interviews). In order to investigate the audience, as an essential part of the stand-up comedy concept and an important local contextual determinant, the data was collected by using two methods. Firstly, the interaction between comedians and audience was thoroughly observed to find what parts of social life addressed through humor got the biggest laugh, and secondly, the characteristics of audience were examined with a structured questionnaire to reaffirm observational data. The content of humor produced by “Splicka scena” is mostly connected to everyday life in Split, hence topics addressed through humor can be helpful for detecting contemporary social features of the city.
