Omnipresence of social networks in everyday life changes the way of communication and interaction among people and affects all aspects of society. Socialization, marketing activities, presidential campaigns, protests and conflicts – they all take place on social networks. Their consequences surpass virtual space. Facebook is the most popular social network with two billion users. It owes its popularity to the diverse possibilities of maintaining relationships and creating new social connections. In contemporary research, social networks are often examined through the concept of social capital - the usefulness of a individual social network, which was theoretically introduced by Bourdieu and popularized in the 1990s in the wake of the "decline" of social values, universal individualization, but also the beginnings of Internet development. This paper attempted to show the transformations of social connections that take place on Facebook, using the theories of social capital. The paper also addresses issues of virtual communities and online-offline relationships. The methods used are survey, that examines users' experiences and visual analysis of Facebook interface, used to display Facebook structure elements that favor the development of social capital.
