The understanding and explanation of the world and the man as an active subject of that world is an activity excercised both by philospohy and science. While philosophy primarily deals with the questions of the very possibility, range and nature of the knowledge itself, science, with it's well defined disciplinary areas, deals with the specific parts of reality in order to sustain a functional relationship between those different parts or aspects; results of that sustainable relationship is what we today see and understand as scientific progress. Basic criteria that designate a certain theory as scientific or pseudo-scientific implies the neccessary interbedding of the philosophical and scientific thought. Theory of evolution is one of the central components of the contemporary worldview or paradigme. Yet, when the physical-reductionist tendency of the contemporary science is taken into account, whole of biology as an independent discipline is brought into question and with it the very theory of evolution. Theory of punctuated equilibrium represents a phase in the development of evolutionary theory, so parallel to the mode in which the coherency between the two theories is established, it is possible to investigate the relationship and the mode in which philosophy and science stand i.e. complement eachother when understood in terms of the ruling social and scientifical paradigme.
