The topic of this Bachelor's Thesis is the comparison between ˮTena“ by Josip Kozarac and Đuka Begović by Ivan Kozarac. The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the main characters of these two works on the basis of the narrative of the Slavonian blood. The paper is divided into five chapters in which we gradually, analyzing the authors and works separately, come to the conclusion that Tena and Đuka Begović share some common personality traits. After a brief introduction, chapter one deals with Josip Kozarac, his life and works. We have put a particular emphasis on the genre of the ˮnovella of character“, in which female characters are best psychologically portrayed. In chapter three we analyze Josip Kozarac's most famous heroine Tena in the context of the eponymous novella where she symbolizes the morally corrupt Slavonija of the second half of the 19th century. In chapter four we acquaint ourselves with the life and works of Ivan Kozarac who is most famous for his short novel Đuka Begović. All the narrative threads present in this novel point to the inner turmoil of its protagonist. What follows is the comparison between Đuka – an intensely passionate man and Tena – a wayward, fallen woman. While psychologically portraying their characters, these authors touch upon the issues of heredity, genetics and sexual determinism. Finally, in the conclusion we state that Tena and Đuka, although members of the opposite sex, have completely similar characters, they are both hot-blooded Slavonians which causes them to have the same drives, passions and lusts.
