This paper aims to further explain the effect of parental mental health problems on their children's future development, focusing primarily on severe and long-lasting consequences of anxiety disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). Since family environment plays the crucial role in the process of child's psychological, social and emotional development, the emphasis will be put on the importance of family and educational factors including attachment with primary caregiver, parenting styles and family interactions. Furthermore, behavioral problems and child maltreatment and neglect will also be discussed as frequent outcomes of living with mentally ill parent. Intergenerational transmission of anxiety patterns will as well be mentioned briefly. Finally, the paper will also present data from different experts in the field, talking about the ways in which parental PTSD, OCD and GAD increase the likelihood of developing the whole range of externalising and internalising problems from early childhood. In conclusion, we will point out the importance of early detection and treatment of disorder, which helps in preventing the transmission of daily stress and anxiety symptoms on children and other family members. We should also stress the fact that mental health disorders usually have tendency to progress to more serious conditions, which is why intensive, frequent and long-term interventions aimed at reinforcement and activation of the positive factors of the whole family are crucial.
