During its history, Dalmatia was under significant influence of the Romance language and culture: first, it was under the influence of Vulgar Latin and later under the Italian and Venetian influence. Language is a living structure, subjected to changes. In modern times these language changes in Dalmatia and Split are manifested through a decreased number of Italianisms in use. Not so long ago, Italianisms were part of everyday language. This work aims to analyse the Italianisms that appear in the newspaper articles of Miljenko Smoje, one of the most important representatives of the Split dialect of the past century, as well as to examine the knowledge of Italianisms among the young population of the city of Split. The Italianisms are collected from the collection of Smoje’s articles published in the book Skitan i pitan. The corpus consists of 385 Italianisms which have been divided into dialectal Italianisms, their derivatives, and Italianisms in the Croatian standard language. The dialectal Italianisms have been divided into semantic fields, while, for research, those referring to the everyday life (Vita quotidiana) have been chosen. The research was conducted among 100 subjects, aged 20 – 26, that live in Split. The results show that more Italianisms are known by those descending from Split or from any other place located along the coast, those that have been living in Split for most of their lives and those that have studied the Italian language.
