This paperworks deals with the question of the characteristics of postcolonial theory that can be applied in analysis of novels ''Muzej bezuvjetne predaje'' and ''Ministarstvo boli'' written by Croatian author Dubravka Ugrešić. There are a few main authors of postcolonial theory who wrote books and studies about their perception of relations between western culture that is usually considered to be dominant and other cultures. Frantz Fanon discusses opression of black people and criticize the term ''negritude'', Edward Said defines ''orientalism'' as discourse form of Orient, while Hommi K. Bhabha from his postmodern position criticizes ideas from Said's book ''Orientalism'' and writes about ''space between'' which is marked by ''hybridity''. Author Marija Todorova outlines history of positive and negative views on Balkan. First theorists of postcolonial theory saw relations of colonizators and colonized in a quite rigid way, which means that the colonizator was always percieved as the negative one in comparison to small, oppressed colonized, but later authors came to realize that both of these sides have their virtues, as well as flaws and that they actually have major influence on each other. In Dubravka Ugrešić's novels postcolonial experience can be read from the fact that there is a subject that leaves not only his own space, but he ''leaves himself'' also. In new society characters are ''welcomed'' with new language and different customes from the ones they are used to. Language is a part of the culture, and culture is a part of the identity of every individual. Because of the anxiety while using their own lanuage characters of these novels use foreign languages or some kind of weird mixture of different languages to hide their own weaknesses. Still, that does not help them in forgeting the traumas they experienced in their former space and that fact participates in deconstruction of their identities. That is why these characters walk across the world unaware of themselves without any particular direction to go to heal their pain. In both novels the protagonists are trying to retrace their identity, but they are doing so in different manners.
