Croatia is in the top 5 countries in Europe in the frequency of alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption impoverishes the individual and his immediate environment, both materially and emotionally, and alcoholism is considered to be a disease that affects the entire family. Accordingly, the goal of this research was to determine and understand the role of the family in the creation of addictive behaviors. In the theoretical part of this work, we introduce the readers to the definition, forms and very history of alcoholism in the world. For the purpose of conducting the research, a qualitative methodology was used, i.e. a total of 7 semi-structured interviews were conducted with users of the Alcoholics Anonymous Split. The interlocutors were reached through purposive sampling. By analyzing and interpreting the collected data, we conclude that we do not necessarily have to look for the cause of the same addiction in the family, although a history of addiction within the family significantly increases the predisposition to developing addiction and the transgenerational transmission of risky behaviors, there are numerous triggers that can turn social alcohol consumption into alcoholism. Although the family does not necessarily have to be one of the causes in the creation of the same addiction, its role is crucial in the treatment process.
